We had a fantastic SPORTS DAY

on Monday 24th June

Involvement in sport is an essential part of each child’s development. At Laleham Primary School we aim to offer a wide variety of opportunities for children to try different sports, encouraging each individual to extend his or her ability and develop their teamwork, perseverance and communication skills.

From Reception, children have specialist PE lessons, delivered by both class teachers and Sports Focus professional coaches. In KS1 the children will engage in a variety of learning activities which include dance, gymnastics and athletics. They develop agility, balance and coordination and begin to build skills which can be applied in a variety of different sports.

As children move up through the school, their PE lessons introduce invasion games, striking and fielding games and racquet sports. During these lessons the children develop skills and techniques, learn the rules and experience playing football, netball, hockey, rugby, athletics, tennis, cricket and rounders. Children in year 4 also have swimming lessons taught by specialists at Spelthorne Leisure Centre.

Children also have the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular sporting activities, many of which lead to the opportunity to represent the school. Our wide-ranging clubs programme includes gymnastics, football and multiskills at KS1, as well as football, hockey, netball, running and Change 4 Life clubs for children in KS2.  External providers run, streetdance, tennis and extra soccer coaching. The school currently has over 230 children regularly participating in extra-curricular sporting clubs. We have a team of year 6 Sports Leaders who have been trained to assist with delivery of many of these clubs. Our lunchtime sports leader also offers the children a range of “opt-into” sporting sessions.

Our extra-curricular clubs programme includes opportunities for children in every year group to develop skills, improve their fitness and have fun getting active! Keep up to date and decide what to join in with looking at our Clubs Page. We also run daily drop in lunch time sports sessions for all year groups. Click on the link to view the timetable. Many of our clubs are fully booked but we do have waiting lists and priority will be given to these children the following term.

We have a busy and exciting sporting calendar! Fixtures include competitive league games and tournaments against other local schools, inter-house competions, and mixed-school games with Buckland, where the children are divided into teams comprising of players from both schools, to encourage teamwork and sportsmanship.

There are a number of inter-house fixtures throughout the year, culminating in Sports Day at the end of the Summer Term. These run in each year group and the totals are displayed on our Sports Board, which the children can see when they come in to lunch. We also collect Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers and run this as an inter-house competition.

The 2018/19 overall winners were LUCAN.

We have a very active and involved team of 18 Sports Leaders, who have a range of roles and responsibilities in the school community. The children attended training courses run by Active Surrey to help them understand their role and plan how they would like to help the whole become active, healthy and happy! They meet half termly to plan and evaluate the weekly sports clubs that they run at lunchtimes with children in years 3 - 6.
