Laleham Church of England Primary School

Medical & Illness

At Laleham, we place a high priority on attendance as it is an essential skill for life and for employment in the future. We do appreciate, however, that a child’s absence due to an illness or a medical appointment can be unavoidable.

Should my child attend school?

Please find some guidance for parents below regarding their child attending school when they are unwell.

Guidance from the NHS

Cold, Cough & High Temperature

  • If your child has a cold and/or cough please send them to school. Each classroom has a supply of tissues available for everyone to use as required.
  • If your child has a high temperature (generally anything over 38c/100f) then please keep them at home until the high temperature has passed or is no longer being controlled by medication.

Sickness & Diarrhoea

  • If your child has vomited then we would ask you to keep them home from school for 48 hours after the last time they vomited.
  • If your child has diarrhoea then we would ask you to keep them home from school for 48 hours from the last bout of diarrhoea

Antibiotics

We are able to administer antibiotics if they are required four times a day. The office team will administer a dose as required around lunchtime - before/after lunch as directed.

  • Medication should be taken by a parent/carer to the school office with a completed Pupil Medication Request Form.
  • It should not be given to the child to bring to school or left in the classroom with the teacher.
  • The medication should be in a named container which clearly has a printed pharmacy label with child's name, dose required and storage (if required the medical room has a fridge for medication).

If however your child is on antibiotics only three times a day we ask that the parents manage this being giving the doses before school, after school and bedtime.

Conjunctivitis

If a child has conjunctivitis or an eye infection you will need to get some cream or drops from the doctors or chemist.  Children can still attend school. If needed we are able to administer eye drops during the school day. Please complete this Pupil Medication Request Form and bring this to the school office along with the eye drops/cream.

Headlice

If a child is seen to have live headlice during the school day, parents will be contacted and advised to go to the chemist to purchase appropriate headlice treatment which should be applied to the hair after school.  There is no requirement for a child to be absent from school if they have headlice. As a precaution the year group will be contacted via email encouraging parents to check their children's hair following a report of headlice.

General Advice

If you have any doubt whether you should send your child into school bring them in and contact the school office in the morning from 8.30am. The school office will pass any information onto the class teacher who will keep an eye on them. If your child begins to feel unwell we will contact you and ask you to arrange for them to be collected either by yourself or another family member or friend.

Alternatively please contact the school office from 8.30am to discuss your child's illness.

Please remember to inform us if you or any of your contacts change their phone numbers
