Laleham Church of England Primary School

Music

At Laleham C of E Primary School we aim to encourage and foster in all children a lifelong love of and connection with music, through active involvement and engagement at all levels. Singing is the foundation of all our musical learning and through this our children discover how to listen and respond to different styles of musicThe children’s creative responses become more formalised in KS2 when they begin to experiment with form, structure, texture and the interrelated dimensions of musicAlongside this we aim to also teach children that music reflects our culture and society which enables children to better understand the world we live in.

All children have the opportunity to further develop their musicianship skills in weekly singing sessions where pupils listen, learn and perform a wide variety of assembly and worship songs. During these sessions, children develop their vocal skills, are challenged to sing in two-parts and our young instrumentalists also have the opportunity to perform to others

Laleham has always been a musical school and has a long-established and thriving choir which is open to children from years 2 to 6. In previous years the choir has participated in the annual Surrey Border Schools concerts in Princes Hall, Aldershot, and in March last year they were due to sing in Dorking Halls as part of the North Surrey Primary Music Festival. Even during this challenging year of Covid restrictions, we have continued to run weekly choir rehearsals with smaller groups of children. We also welcome Surrey Arts into our school who offer a range of instrumental lessons to children.

We strongly believe that every child is musical, and a musical school is a happy school. Music has the power to inspire us, bring us together and make us smile.
