At Laleham C of E School, we are passionate about maths! We aim to develop our children as mathematicians who enjoy engaging with the processes of problem solving over and above the completion of the actual calculations involved. We embed the core skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, realising the importance and application of number in an everyday real life context.

Mental arithmetic is taught as part of every lesson. It is our aim that the children know all of the times tables up to 12 x12 by the end of Year 4. Children are taught a variety of strategies to learn their tables and we encourage parents to help with their learning at home. Children have access to TTRockstars which help embed these number facts and multiplication facts both in school and at home. 

 We promote the importance of learning the multiplication tables and their related division facts through fun, effective, relevant lessons, celebrating individual achievements along the way. We develop an understanding of shape, data and measures through practical creative lessons, which are often cross-curricular and encourage pupil led investigations. Our teaching of mathematics aims to equip children with the necessary numeracy skills to allow them to use different methods and strategies in everyday life as they continue on their learning journey.

KIRFs - Key Instant Recall Facts

KIRFs are the ‘Key Instant Recall Facts’ that children need to secure during their primary years. They include facts such as number bonds and times tables. They are particularly useful when calculating, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing but also underpin many other areas of mathematics. For example, in order to find equivalent fractions in Year 6, children need to be able to rapidly recall their knowledge of common multiples (numbers in particular times tables). When children have quick access to a bank of facts, which incur little cost to working memory, they have more capacity to think about more complex problems that draw on these facts. We have noticed that without regular rehearsal, these facts are forgotten so it is essential they are practised regularly and embedded in children’s long-term memory so they can be recalled quickly and accurately.
